What is enough?
I often think about the concept of enough. I ask myself questions such as, how much money is enough for me to feel secure and free? Do I have enough money in my emergency fund? If I get fired from this job or decide to leave will there be other opportunities I would enjoy? I try to quantify enough. Seeking an answer to feel secure. It’s truly all about security. I have spent hours pondering the exact amount of money I would need to feel secure and abundant.
Asking the question what is enough infers that there is an answer to that question. I don’t believe there is an answer. That question has stemmed from having a scarcity mindset. If I do not believe there is enough, then I must define what is it and use all my power and control to meet that definition.
What if we reframed the question to a belief that there is always enough? Right now, there is enough. Sit with that for a minute. How does it make you feel? Abundant and free. What would happen if you believed that there was enough? I know that it would drastically change my life. If I believed in abundant opportunities, I wouldn’t fear losing my job or I would decide to leave a job if the workplace was toxic or just not fulfilling my needs. I would give to others generously, knowing there would always be enough for me. I would leave toxic relationships knowing there are enough opportunities to find love and connection in this world. I wouldn’t hoard money and material things trusting that they would flow into my life when I needed them.
Right out of college, I worked for a tiny non-profit focusing on Women’s rights within religion. One of the co-founders there would always start each program by saying,
“If we share, there is enough for everyone.” - Mary E. Hunt
Words I aspire to live by.
How would your life be changed with the belief that there is enough?
PS. Writing this piece in a coffee shop, I overheard a woman near me say “There is always enough for everyone.” Serendipitous and on-brand for Portland.
