Wintering Well
As the official fall season ends and winter approaches, I can feel my body tense in anticipation of mentally challenging days ahead. My past few winters in the PNW have been difficult. I decided to move to Portland in the glorious month of November 2021, not anticipating the rain to be such a problem. Dealing with the dreary days while trying to build community and feel a sense of peace in a new place clear across the country from a familiar face was difficult. Yet I made it through that first winter by taking long walks and joining many meet-up groups. This past winter was slightly easier since I had a few connections, but it still proved difficult. I fought the winter blues by taking a modern dance class and filling up my social calendar. This winter I want to release the tension and shift my mindset for the season. Below are a few things I am focusing on to create contentment in the upcoming winter season.
Nourishing food: eating seasonally and trying new recipes out of a cookbook!
Intentional evenings: reading, sewing, crocheting, and writing. Learning new skills instead of watching shows or getting consumed by social media.
Mindful movement: practicing yoga daily, walking, and getting out of the house once a week for a dance class.
Slowing down: Sleeping longer & daydreaming.
Connecting with friends joyfully: crafting, baking, and bringing friends into everyday life.
